Huckleberry Picking!!!

On Saturday, Jim and I got a burr in our saddle. A hankerin' for some sweet, juicy huckleberries!

I decided that we should go up above Estacada towards Timothy Lake. When I was a kid, back in the '60's, my grandparents would take us huckleberry picking up at High Rocks. There used to be a fire lookout there. I remember climbing up the stairs and going inside the lookout. Unfortunately, it is no longer there! And we did not make it to the top of High Rocks. Came close though. There is a reason why we did not.....read on.

Looking down at Timothy Lake from a clear cut area.

From that same spot, we could look SE and see Mt. Jefferson. :)

Again, looking SE at Jeff which is to the Right.
The higher butte to the left is Olallie Butte. If you look closely, follow the butte down its right slope. Follow Jeff's left slope (as you look at it). There is just a tad bit of cloudiness. That is smoke from the fires at Olallie. We wouldn't have known about that had we not stopped at the Ripplebrook Ranger station. Hope to get up there, Olallie on Wednesday to check out the damage to our most favorite place in the world. And, see if we can get more huckleberries.

These pink flowers were blooming all over the place. The hummingbirds LOVED them. We were hovered over, buzzed, and dive bombed all afternoon.

This is one part of High Rocks. Ah. So many fond memories of huckleberry picking with my mom's parents. Grandpa was a logger out of Molalla. He knew the woods above Molalla and Estacada like the back of his hand! He knew about High Rocks.

This was bazaar! And this is why we couldn't get to the top of High Rocks.
Out in the middle of no where, these people were having a party. Not a tea party, either!! Although, they could be members of THE tea party!
See Mt. Hood? On the other side of those vehicles is a cliff. These rednecks were trap shooting over the cliff!!! Others were shooting their handguns on the other side of the road which was behind me and the camera. They brought in their porta potties. And they had BIG speakers. Apparently, they had a live band concert in this spot the previous evening! "Isle of Swine." classy, huh?? The guys were too....ponytails. missing teeth. not all of them but most.
Jim parked the car and went over to chat. (duh.) They offered him a beer. hmmm. beer. guns. guys. damn. I am stuck. i took off down the road with my bucket in search of huckleberries. about 15 min later, Bozo drove the pickup to where I was.

This is Mt. Hood.

We returned to the area where we originally found huckleberries.
We stayed there until after 6pm. I thought this a pretty picture.
And then....the star of the show.....HUCKLEBERRIES!!!
